President's Message

By Bob Phelan

Well we were on vacation this last week so I was just going to say: "GONE FISHING". But really I should say "GONE to DISNEYLAND", for the kids Easter vacation week.

I heard the Red Light/Green Light Hoedown went pretty well, and we made some money, wasn't that a nice surprise. We should all thank Bert next time we see him, for allowing us to borrow the red light green light unit. Now for the poll question- How many of you ran the yellow light?

Be on the look out for the Lois and Don Car Rally, April 30th. The Garage sale is this month,

I think you should start bringing over those precious items that are so hard to part with,

well some of them anyway. Looking forward to seeing you with your square dance shoes on.

Thanks --- Bob

A Note from the Publishing Editor

By Lisa Woodard

You may notice some slight changes to your Record this month. Just some non-discernable differences that you can't quite put your finger on. Well don't fear, it could just be the fingerprints of the new publishing editor. As of this April issue, I will be taking over the publishing duties of the Record, as Tom Sandow will be leaving as publisher, due to health issues.

Over the last month, I have been consulting with Tom to help facilitate a smooth, seamless transition in both the hardcopy and electronic circulation of the publication. However, even with the best of planning and the utmost caution things sometimes go a bit catawampus. If this happens, (and I am not saying it will!!) please let me know so I can set it to right as soon as possible. Your patience, support and sense of humor are appreciated during this changeover.

Article submissions to the Record or editorial comments about the Record should be e-mailed to ltwoody@pacbell.net Please be sure to note "for the Record" in the subject line of your e-mail, so I know it's not spam.

All that Jazz

By Don and Wynell Snodgrass

As most of you know, we enjoy several Jazz Festivals during the year. On the last weekend of March we went to Eureka for our first Festival of the year. I thought one event was worthy of note. One of the bands, Titan Hot 7, have developed a following of '20 Something' dancers. There were 12 to 14 of them at this particular event.
When the band started playing Woodchoppers Ball, several of these people came onto the dance floor, which was in front of the seated audience. And they started dancing what I would call The Jitterbug. I think they simply call it Swing Dancing now. All the dancers were doing high kicks, lifts and rapid, intricate footwork. I suddenly noticed one couple, he is well muscled average man, she is a somewhat smaller girl, in the middle of the floor. Suddenly she was in the air, flipping like a windmill. A few minutes later, she sat down. But it was a real WOW site to see her flipping like that. But in addition to that, it was highly entertaining just to watch these 'kids' dance. If our Club had 10% of the energy exhibited on that floor, we would have a real 'Hot" club.

Refreshments

By Diana Lorentzen

Thanks again to all of you for the wonderful food you provided for our April Hoedown. As usual we got a lot of complements on the great
food.
I also want to thank those of you who helped me with the set up and clean up.

Squares In Vancouver

By Tom and Sue Sandow

On March 24th, Sue and I flew to Vancouver, Washington, to spend a long weekend with our daughter and her family. In an effort to prevent Dorothy and John from being the most traveled CB'ers, at least for one weekend, we packed our square dance duds (I understand that Dorothy and John packed theirs too, but that's another story).

We attended a dance at the Clark County Square Dance Center (more on that later) on Saturday night hosted by The Silver Stars, a Mainstream level club. The Silver Stars dance on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays while The Happy Hoppers (a Plus club) dance on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays. There is a dance at the center every Saturday from September thru June.
From 7:00 to 7:30 they had rounds and from 7:30 to 8:00 they had Plus tips; the remainder of the evening was Mainstream. Darrell Kalmbach is the club's caller and he did a fine job of making the Mainstream program entertaining and fun. One of the best things about square dancing is that regardless of where you go you can jump into any square and be welcomed. Everyone was very kind and curious about the Californians while we were just as curious about square dancers in the Great Northwest.
The Silver Stars and The Happy Hoppers have a real sweet deal going; they have their own hall! I'm not sure how it was managed but the result is a guaranteed place to dance as well as a source of income from rentals for other events. The hall has a full kitchen and a cloakroom as well as a 60' x 120' dance floor and stage. In warm weather, they can dance outside on a deck behind the hall. Speakers are mounted in the front and back of the hall so the sound is excellent. This is probably the best floor we've ever danced on; a Pergo-type of wood floor with a pad underneath that makes for wonderful dancing.
Much as the Delta Squares do here, the Silver Stars break at about 9:30 for refreshments. Before going back to dancing the president of the club made announcements and then thanked each guest club represented that night. Last to be recognized were the Clutch Busters from Concord, California. They called Sue and I up for recognition and presented us with a miniature of their club badge in the form of a dangle. Very nice and much appreciated.
If you're in the Portland/Vancouver area on a Saturday night, check out the dancing at the Clark County Square Dance Center. Great venue, great dancing, great people.

CB Car Rally XVII

By Don and Lois Lollich

This year's rally will start from the Sun Valley Mall parking lot near the corner of Sunvalley Blvd. and Contra Costa Blvd. where we have started several past rallies. We will start the first car out at 12:30, so try to be there by 12-Noon. The route this year is about 105 miles, and will take about 3½ hours of driving. We have said this in the past, and it is still applicable after 16 years, there are few new roads, so most of this year's roads you have been on before. There are freeways, where you will need a $3.00 bridge toll, city streets, crowded country roads, and some you will probably never want to go on again. There are a couple of bad intersections, but hang in there and eventually there will be a break.
Dinner will be near where you start and will be served at 5:30 PM. The time from first car out to dinner time gives you about one-hour slack time to stop along the way.
Dinners include: salad, bread, coffee, tea, ice tea or soda. The dinner selections are: Veal Marsala, Chicken Piccata, and Seafood Ravioli. The price is $18.00 per person, and we are asking a $2.00 per person registration fee for a total of $20.00 per person. There is beer available at $3.75, and wine by the glass or bottle. Wine by the bottle is $14.00 to $31.00. Beer and wine are on you.
Drive carefully and enjoy the scenery!

WE-WAN-CHU Anniversary Party "50"

By Joe Gerhards

The Anniversary Party committee consists of John and Dorothy Evans (co-chairs), Bob and Liz Phelan, Tom and Susan Sandow, Herb Yonge
and Kathy O'Toole and Joe Gerhards and Alfreda Young (co-chairs). In the March Record, John put out the request listed below for some Wewanchu's for each of you to do. I have copied them for your
convenience and as a reminder to begin now (that is like NOW) to gather and provide info to me. Please note I discontinued the value.net email
address John listed and replaced it with joeghds@astound.net . So far I have received several club membership rosters from Ted
Turgeon. They include booklets from 1981, 1989, 1991,1996. The older ones included such things as birthdays, anniversaries, constitution, and board duties. Very interesting!! I even recognized a few names.
Lois Lollich told me she had photos and would be gathering some for us. Could each of you try to find your new dancer class graduation picture so we can copy it and make a collage of them.
(Below copied in whole from the March Record)
WEWANCHU By John Evans
The Anniversary Committee wants all members and friends to participate in the WEWANCHU program for the Anniversary Party.
WEWANCHU:
to find the names, addresses, and phone numbers of prior members and forward them to Joe Gerhards (joeghds@value.net):
to collect the names of all the prior callers;
to let us know if you have any of the previous club outfits or pictures of those outfits;
to start writing down fond memories you have related to the club;
to be with us on September 16 to have very good time!

News From The Alley

By Avis Walker

Our Bowling/Lunch Bunch started out March on the 7th with our NO TAP Tuesday. Don Lollich had returned to bowling after his not so happy vacation experience. Don Snodgrass and Don Orton both rolled turkeys in their first game but Don S. took the high game with a lovely 179. For a NO TAP day the rest of us did pretty BADLY. In the second game Wynell Snodgrass rolled her first ever eagle (4 in a row), Don Orton rolled an eagle for a great 210 game that he was very proud of and gave him high game until John Walker finished his game of all strikes except for l spare and a fabulous 290. In the third game Wynell S. and Don Lollich each rolled a turkey while Liz Phelan rolled her all time high game of 135. Don Snodgrass rolled 4 in a row for an eagle but John Walker again took high game with 4 in a row, an open frame, and then 5 in a row for a 254. This also gave him high series of the day of 699. Needless to say this gave him men's first place money of $8.00 and a handicapped series of 839.
On March 14th we were back to regular bowling. In the first game Avis Walker picked up a 1-5-3-6-7 mess and tied with Wally Everette with a 127. Don S. and Liz tied at 124 while Don L., Don O. and Wynell tied at 112. John Walker bowled the high game of the day with a 189 as well as high game in the 1st and 3rd with 2 games of 140 each. We were passing a Tootsie Roll Pop around as the roving prize for rolling a gutter ball and most of the fingerprints on it were male that day. We all went on to IHOP for lunch with 16 of us showing up. This included, Mary and Milan Gregovich, Peg and Ken Wygal, Lois Lollich, and Ray Pardee who weren't able to join us at bowling but were available for lunch that day.
On March 21st we not only had the pleasure of Liz Phelan's company and her foster niece, Alissa but also her friend Karen Katich. Karen took honors of high score for the first game. Milan Gregovich and Avis Walker tied for honors in the second game. Karen also took high game in the third with a 177 and Don Snodgrass and Avis W. tied for second place at 159. I don't understand how I could beat John 2 out of 3 games and he still beat me total pins by 11. Although I guess it could have something to do with the 93 I bowled in the first game. We all went on over to Buttercup Grill for lunch and pretty well took over the back room when 18 of us showed up for lunch. This included a wonderful visit with Mary and Milan's daughter-in-law and grandson, Luke Milan Gregovich.
We started off March 28th singing "Happy Birthday" to the Phelan's niece Alissa. It was her first birthday and she just stared at us as if we were nuts. But she did enjoy the doughnut hole. Even though this was regular bowling with no NO TAP perks John Walker and Bob Erwin tied in the first game with scores of 196. This put the men on our alley ahead by 102 pins. Allen Wesdorf took the second game with a whopping 182 and on our alley the women beat the men by 16 pins. In the third game no one did super well but Avis managed to win with a 157. The women on our alley beat the men by 27 pins that game but John W., Don S. and Milan ended up the champs for the day by 56 pins. Most folks weren't available for lunch that day but 10 of us went to Serendipity. As it was right across the street from Mt. Diablo Hospital it was very convenient for those without coughs and colds to drop in and say "Hello" to Martha and to Ken Wygal who was in there after his skin graft operation on his leg. I hear that Martha is doing a bit better and Ken Wygal has been released to go home but needs to take it easy to give his graft a chance to heal.
If you have some free time come join us any Tuesday. 9:30 at Diablo Lanes on Monument Blvd. or if you want to go to lunch be there by 11:30.
