The RECORD Volume XXXXV No. 2 Robert Kratz - Publisher February, 2004 President's Message by Martha Erwin Who ever dreamed up this idea that the president should have a column every month in The Record?!?!? It comes in my category of a good-little-bad-little thing. I've decided to devote this column to the special events happening in Feb. and March, especially for the understanding of our Newer Dancers. So, here goes: Welcome to our Newer Dancers. Experienced CB (stands for Clutch Buster) dancers look forward to getting acquainted and sharing our love for square dancing punctuated with a Yellow Rock or two. The month of February has just one special event, the potluck. By the time you read this you will know all about that. March is full of special events this year. First is the bowling/pizza party on March 7 with Mary Gregovich in charge of bowling and Avis Walker in charge of the pizza. This fun time together is not just for experienced bowlers, there's a prize for the most gutter balls. Wynell has claimed she is queen of the gutter ball bowlers – anyone want to challenge her? We just have fun. Please join us. More on this will be available on Thursday nights and in this newsletter. March 12 is a hoedown sponsored by the Clutch Busters. What's a hoedown? A square dance "party" open to all square dancers. This Friday night hoedown will be a red-light, green-light hoedown. First the caller will call a tip at January newer dancers level, then a tip at plus dancer level (that's the level our club dances.) Angels (experienced dancers) will dance with the newer dancers as we do on Thursday night. The caller will be our own Gary Kendall, with whom you are all acquainted, and he won't call anything you haven't already danced. You may feel intimidated since you've only had a few weeks of classes, but, again, Gary won't call anything you haven't already heard. And, hopefully, you will have the pleasure of dancing with other January level newer dancers. The more often you square dance the better at dancing you will become. Please plan dancing with us at the March 12. There will be an After Party at the home of Frank and Shirlee Birsa. Not willing to let the evening fun end, we get together sometimes to eat (what else!) and visit (some more). It would be great if you would join us. If you would like to ride to their home with one of the CB's, let us know. Maps will be available at the hoedown. See articles further on. Next in March is THE Car Rally organized and executed by Don and Lois Lollich, much to the delight of the club. The general idea is, a car of, usually, four people, start from a designated place, at a designated time, follow a map of weird instructions, keeping a sharp eye out for obscure landmarks which get duly noted (if spotted), arriving at an unknown restaurant (CB's love to eat!) to find out who won the White Cane award, among others. Most do manage to arrive at the restaurant, but in the past it has been known a car will get lost and has to open the panic envelope provided just for such emergency. All in all it is a grand afternoon. Bob and I recall our first rally as the most fun of the 10 or 12 we've been on, simply because it was a first experience for everyone in the car. So if some of the newer dancers want to get together in one car, you won't regret it. Or, if you prefer to ride with others, let your wishes be known. Our car, for one, is looking for riders. Looking into April, there will be a garage sale, the funds going to support club activities. So save your good stuff for our fabulous garage sale. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let the newer dancer chairman (the guys at the door) or myself know. It is a delight to get to know each and every one of you. Yellow Rocks, Martha Erwin, President Birthdays Bob Erwin 2/1 Shirlee Birsa 2/5 Don Lollich 2/10 Martha Erwin 2/12 Mary Gregovich 2/20 Kathleen Kirk 2/24 Avis Walker 1/19 Anniversaries Tom and Flo Roberts 2/15/81 Bob and Chris Kratz 2/28/59 Welcome Back Erna After an absence, Erna Beutel has rejoined the Clutch Busters and from her performance at last Thursday's class night, she has not forgotten a thing. Its good to see you back Erna. Potluck This Thursday is our spring potluck (that's like tomorrow). Our new dancers will be in attendance so be sure and double up on the recipe and make sure there is plenty for everyone. Angels have been assigned to host and introduce our new dancers. New dancers need bring only their appetites and desire to dance, eat and have a good time. Angels will bring utensils for them and we all will provide that great CB food. New dancers and their angels will be first at the food, the rest of you can hope we leave something for you. Hoedown The theme for our New Dancer/Plus will be "Come Dance in the Garden". Many of our new dancers have expressed their desire to attend and we should all have a great time. This Red Light/Green Light extravaganza will be held at the Oak Park Center (our usual dance location) at 8:00 pm. on March 12. Everyone is asked to voluntarily bring a wrapped door prize (something new you might want to take home from a hoedown) or a nice 4" potted plant, pot foil wrapped and/or decorated. So arrive early and bring that delicious food the CBers are known for. FOOD AND WORK ASSIGNMENTS ARE GIVEN ON THE LAST PAGE OF THIS PAPER. Hoedown After party An after party, for our new dancers info, is a party held after the hoedown at the home of one of the CBers and we would like the new dancers to join us. Frank and Shirlee Birsa are hosting the after party at their home in Antioch and maps and directions will be available at the hoedown. So come, relax and enjoy a great CB get together. Feel free to bring some finger foods and the beverage of your choice. Coffee is provided. From your Official Halloween Headquarters- by Bob Phelan I added a word to January Clue, may or may not help. We welcome them to our class and are sure they will enjoy square dancing as much as all of us. CBers should make sure all new dancers have a partner for every tip, are made to feel welcome and have a great evening. Thank you to all the angels and for club member support of the class. Remember to come early (7:15) so we are set up and ready to dance at 7:30. What is a CB Road Rally Each year, since I can remember (with the exception of last year) Don and Lois Lollich have hosted a road rally. This event has drawn more CBers, ex-cbers and other friends than any other event we hold. Why? Because it's so much fun!!!!!!! Don and Lois spend weeks ( if not months) planning a route throughout Contra Costa County and often into surrounding counties and provide us with clues and directions (go straight through 9 stop lights and take the first available right, then go 6.6 miles and...). We are also given clues of items, signs, things of interest to look for along the way. When these are spotted, you write down the location. The car load with the most correct answers wins a prize. All roads finally lead to a nice restaurant we we meet for dinner (a panic envelope is provided for Jack Giolitti and others who occasionally lose their way. Prizes are also awarded to the car with the best time and closest to the correct route mileage. This years Car Rally will be on March 21. So lets team up some new dancers with current members and hit the road. CB Road Rally - Aside by Dorothy Evans In case you missed it last Thursday, Jack Giolitti proposed to me (on bended knee and with flowers!) to be his co-pilot at the car rally. Stunned and tongue-tied, I managed to accept; however, I now fear if we get lost, I will need to beg his forgiveness in like manner. What's your favorite flower, Jack? Dorothy Spring Campout The Terry and Lynn Leonard Campout will be May 21, 22 and 23. Terry needs sign ups before May 1 to make reservations. Activities and extent of the outing will depend on the number of CBers and their friends who attend. Terry has to have the names of participants early so space can be reserved. We were not able to reserve the needed space last year because we did not sign up early enough. Watch for a sign up list at a square dance class near you. Bowling/Pizza Party New Dancers Invited CBers are looking forward to this year's bowling/pizza party and would like our new dancer class group to join us. The event is hosted by Mary Gregovich and Avis Walker on March 7, at Diablo Lanes, 1500 Monument Blvd, Concord. You can contact Mary or Avis with any questions. Bowling starts at 2:00 pm so arrive by 1:30 to get your lane assignment, shoes and ball and be ready to go. Cost for bowling is $2.50 per game, and we will be bowling two games. Shoes will be extra this year. There will be prizes and trophies for the winners and fun for everyone. If you can't attend the bowling event, be sure and join us for the pizza. Mary Gregovich will be collecting the bowling money this Thursday night. Bowlers needing shoes will pay the $3.00 shoe fee at the alley. Avis will be signing up people for the pizza party, after the bowling. Please be ready to pay for your pizza order when signing up as Avis must prepay the pizzas when ordering them the day before the event. Otherwise we have to pay for the banquette room. Pizza eating will begin at 4:30 at the Round Table Pizza Parlor, 85 Chilpancingo Pkwy, beside KMart in Pleasant Hill. News From the Alley Avis Walker finally took her computer to the computer hospital and we are looking forward to a complete recovery. Next month you will be reunited with all your bowling friends, see if they scored and what is happening in their full and exciting lives. So join this Bowling group every Tuesday morning at Diablo Lanes on Monument Blvd. to bowl and/or have lunch with them afterwards. Garage Sale Jack Giolitti has once again come through and offered his abode as the site of our April 17 Garage sale. We will have full details on drop off dates and work times for the sale in the next Record. Some new rules for this year. Be sure what you bring is in good condition and has a chance of selling. "One's man's junk is another man's treasure" has its limits. Also any electronics, including computers, must have the donors name attached and you will be asked to take it back home if it does not sell. Ice Cream Social Kathy O'Toole agreed to host our May 13 Ice Cream Social. She will need strong arms to scoop and ice cream lovers to eat. More later.
