President's Message:

by Dorothy Evans

With a wink of the eye, January has come and gone, but what a great January it was. We started the month with the hope of a good turnout at our new dancer class and that is exactly what we had. Eleven people have enthusiastically signed on for the first eight week session, with the possibility of one more couple joining us. Thanks to Martha, and the entire club, for helping them along.

The clothing sale was a big success, with many of our new dancers enjoying the opportunity to purchase some great new outfits without paying a fortune. Thanks to Erna who not only organized the sale, but has agreed to continue it through our new dancer hoedown in March.

Mid-month, Avis, Mary, John and Milan hosted another terrific bowling party. The club has some very skilled bowlers and one truly lousy one (me)! Thanks go to the Gregovichs and Walkers for all their hard work chairing this party.

We ended the month with the NCSDA Stampede in Dublin . The Woodards planned transportation and dinner at the Black Angus for those from our club who wished to attend. Thank you, Tracy and Lisa '“ it was a lot of fun.

Looking forward to February 24th, the Phelans are chairing the potluck to welcome our new dancers. Bob and Liz are famous for their parties, and this one should be no exception.

Lastly, I would personally like to thank the Board and the club for putting up with the long meetings in both January and February. We will have an additional lengthy one in March due to the bylaw changes and then we can go back to more enjoyable meetings where we can discuss issues without being rushed.

Yellow rocks,

Dorothy

CB Car Rally XVI

March 13, 2005

by Road Masters Don & Lois Lollich

This year's rally will start from the same parking lot at the corner of Willow Pass (it is really Sun Valley Blvd. ) and Contra Costa Blvd. by the Bank of Agriculture & Commerce Bldg., the same place we have started the last several rallies. Be there by 12:30 pm, and the first car out by 1:00 pm.

The route this year is about 70 miles and three hours of driving. Over the past 15 years we have used nearly every road in the area, so the roads this year will probably look familiar. Take your time and have a nice drive. The route is some urban, some open country, and some very narrow, crooked and steep.

Dinner will be at a restaurant a few miles from the start, and will be served at 5:30. The dinner choices are: Half pound prime rib with au jus, creamed horseradish and garlic mashed potatoes at $25.00; Lemon herb chicken with rice pilaf at $22.00; and Roasted salmon with rice pilaf at $25.00 All entrees include bread, butter, mixed green salad with ranch style dressing, coffee, iced tea or soda, tax and gratuity. A full bar is available, and wine by the glass or bottle. The corkage is $10.00 if you want to bring your own wine.

We will have a sign-up sheet starting Feb. 10, and we will need a final count and money by no later than March 10. Make checks payable to Donald Lollich. We would like to collect a $1.00 per person registration fee the day of the rally or before.

New Dancer Class

by Martha Erwin

New Dancer Class of 2005 by Martha & Bob Erwin, Class chair.

We extend a Grand Clutch Buster Welcome to Pat, Maria, Tami, Sandy, Karyn, John, Kerry, Bonnie & Garry, Jack & Jean (that is not a misprint, this is not Jack and Jean Strickler, this is Jack & Jean O'Hara. Now doesn't that present the potential for confusion!), Bob & Laurie, and, Sue & Tom. Mostly these dancers are brand new to square dancing and have expressed their appreciation for the club angels who are helping them. So, 'śThank You'ť Club Angels from the New Dancers. The enthusiasm on the square dance floor is Wonderful! We're glad you all are having so much fun. It only gets better!

Our goal is to start dancing AT 7:30 as advertised. The hall will be open by 7:15 so we can get the room set up and ready to square up and make the most of our limited new dancer's class time starting at 7:30.

For club members, an Angels sign-up sheet is available for the potluck, or, if you miss it, give us a call or email.

Recycled clothing will be available Feb. 10, that's today, and then at our Newer Dancer Hoedown on March 11. Shopping is open to club members as well as new dancers. Erna B. is the lady in charge with assistance from Lisa. Thank you, Erna and Lisa.

Member update

by Dorothy Evans

I spoke with Jo Carlson today and unfortunately she's had quite a rough time since her trip to Europe last year. Due to a fall while on vacation, she has been undergoing cortisone shots and may be facing knee replacement.

This obviously limits her ability to dance. I'm sure we all send her our best wishes for a thorough recovery.

Raffle Tickets

Feeling Lucky? The Concord Stompers are sponsoring a Raffle and the first prize is a performance by the Ghost Rider Band. If we all participate perhaps we could win them for a future event.

The California State Square Dance Convention in San Diego is also holding a raffle with a number of great prizes and a rebate back to the club on tickets sold. See the Evans for more information.

In Memoriam

by Bonny Zehrung

A Tribute to her Mother

We held her hand, that's all that we could do.

We loved each other'”that much we knew was true.

And as we sat our hearts just seem to know,

That life is brief on this earth here below.

We held her hand'”the hand that held us near

In times of joy and even shed a tear.

Each day is new'”sometimes we want to cry
But love will help when we ask the question why.

We held her hand'”she knew that we were there.

She tried to smile to show how she did care.

And so we sat at times and didn't say a word

We prayed each day to our Redeeming Lord.

She held our hand'”that's all that she could do.

She loved us all and we know that is true.

So in your heart you know she's happy now.

For she has gone to be with God awhile.

CB Hoedowns Are Here

The Clutch Busters will host their first Hoedown of the year on Friday March 11 at the Oak Park Center . The one and only Gary Kendall will be calling this gala new dancer event and it promises to be an exciting evening.

A week later, on Saturday, March 19 we will all be flying around our squares to the calling of Jet Roberts with round dance cuing by George Gardner. Jet is from the Sacramento area but is a nationally renowned caller and puts on a great night of square dancing.

CBers are asked to bring a door prize to each hoedown, something new and wrapped. Something that you might like to receive as a door prize. Food and work assignments are shown at the end of this paper.

News From the Alley

By Avis Walker

Our bowling/lunch bunch started out the New Year on January 4th by celebrating Avis and John Walker's anniversary and presenting us with a beautiful card. However, an anniversary does not quell the competitive spirit between spouses.

Mrs. Snodgrass and Walker were lined up opposite Mr. Snodgrass and Walker on the score sheet and that is how competitions sometimes begin. Especially when it is a NO TAP day and the sky is the limit for possibilities and Wynell and Avis beat Don and John the first game by 22 pins. Don Snodgrass started out with a big smile when he picked up the 3-5-7 split and Allen Wesdorf was a happy bowler when he got 5 in a row. Bob Erwin ended his first game with a turkey.

Avis thought she had the high score with a 198 until Rachel Ireland ended her game with 6 in a row for a 209. The second game had a lot of xs up on the board when Allen Wesdorf ended his game with 4 in a row for a 181, Pat Pardee turkeyed out for a 198, Wally Everett had a turkey in the 5th frame and Tom Lococo ended with 4 in a row for a 204. Again, Avis thought she had high game with 4 in a row in the 10th and a 214 until Janet Lococo's last frame gave her a 215. At this point Wynell and Avis were still ahead of Don and John's total pins by 42 pins.

In the third game, John Walker started off with a turkey and had a very good game going but Tom Lococo had 6 in a row and took high game with a 258 and high series with a 629. Wynell held up her end of our team and turkeyed out for a 171 but Avis crumbled under pressure and the guys beat us total pins by 4.

We all went to lunch at CoCo 's where John and I were presented with a great big piece of anniversary cherry pie! YUM! The next week when we got the results of the NO TAP contest with handicaps added Tom Lococo took men's 1st place for an $8.00 win and wife Janet took women's 2nd for a $4.00 win. Congratulations on great bowling and keeping our group in the winner's circle.

Bowling on January 11th looked like it was going to be an uphill battle when John Walker started off with a split and so did Pat Pardee. Pat picked up her 5-6 split but John missed his by a hair. On all six of our lanes John Walker had the high score in the 9th frame with a 130 and then turkeyed out to win with a 160.

Wynell had a really good day with a 111, a 117 and a 122. She beat John Walker in the 2nd game; he didn't want me to tell his score but we know that she beat him by 9 pins. Bob Erwin picked up a 5-10 split, Ken Wygal bowled 26 pins over his average and Tom Lococo took high game with a 192. The third game didn't get much better but John Walker did manage to pick up a spare by bouncing the ball off the wall and taking out the 7 pin.

On our lane Wynell was ahead of us all in the 8th frame but Rachel Ireland, and Avis and John Walker managed to beat her by a few pins while she beat husband Don by 1 pin. We all took off for lunch and drowned our sorrows in good food and companionship.

On January 18th we celebrated my birthday with a candle and doughnut hole provided by Wynell Snodgrass. The lineup was the same of Snodgrass and Walker versus Snodgrass and Walker. Milan Gregovich started out with a very nice turkey for a 147 game but Avis aced him out by 3 pins with a 150. Wynell had a very nice 110 and the girls were ahead of the guys by 41 pins.

In the second game Avis had the turkey for a 160 but Milan aced me out by one pin for a 161 and Wally Everett took high game with a turkey and a 184. Bob Erwin had a very nice game; 35 pins over his average. John and Don did a little better that game but the girls were still ahead of them by 21 pins.

In the last game Ken Wygal bowled 35 pins over his average, Allen Wesdorf had a great 182 and Wynell bowled a 130 but John Walker found his mark and eagled out for high game of the day of 206. When all the scores were tallied up Wynell and Don had tied series and John had beat Avis by 24 pins for the day. We all went to Baker's Square for lunch where we ran into John Evans who was having a business lunch with two lovely clients so we harassed him a little bit while I enjoyed my birthday treat of Caramel Supreme Velvet Pie. Double YUM!! That sort of made up for John beating me on my birthday.

We had received an e-mail from our Southern California bowling buddies Joan and Ron Trujillo telling us that in their NO TAP tournament on Jan. 14th Ron's series was a 738 and Joan's was 739. Way to go Joan and Ron!! It certainly gives us a high standard to go for. Great bowling for both of you.

On January 25th there weren't many of us present. Wynell and Don Snodgrass were missing as Don was recuperating from surgery. Wally and Bill Everett had to leave during the 2nd game as Bill was not feeling well. We had the very nice surprise of Flo and Tom Roberts dropping by to visit for a while. John Walker started off the day with 6 strikes in a row for high game of the day of 248. Great bowling John! Janet Lococo followed with a 160 and Ken Wygal had a 39 pin over average game. If Ken keeps this up he will have most improved bowler in no time. In the 2nd game Don Orton picked up a 5-10-7 split and John Walker had a turkey for a 193 game. Rachel Ireland took high game in the 3rd with a 187 followed by Tom Lococo with a 170 and Allen Wesdorf with a 160. We all went to CoCo 's for lunch where we were joined by Peg Wygal and Lois and Don Lollich. As usual we ended our bowling day with good food and fellowship and hope the rest of you have a chance to join us some Tuesday

Bowling/Pizza Party

by Avis Walker

Mary and Milan Gregovich and Avis and John Walker were co-hosts to the Clutch Buster annual Bowling/Pizza Party kicking off our social year on Sunday, January 23rd.

We had a wonderful turnout for the occasion with current CBers, ex-CBers and friends and children of CBers in attendance. I'm happy to report that our caller Gary Kendall and his lovely wife April were able to attend this year and that Gary got to experience the wearing of the black lei. Past members Pat and Bill Scott, Alyce and Walt Jones, Sally Merchant, Rose and Jack Bree, Pat and Ray Pardee, Wally and Bill Everett, Peg and Ken Wygal, Gloria and Art Price, and Marlene Sewell were all in attendance. We had 40 bowlers on the lanes and 8 cheerleaders to watch the fun.

Out of those 40 bowlers 31 managed to roll 87 gutter balls. Jack Giolitti rolled the last and took home the bottle with the black balloon; but Liz Phelan rolled the MOST and claimed this year's title of GG (Gutter Gal) and the cutest prize of all, a bear wearing Hollywood style glasses and sporting a sign that read 'śYou have reached star status'ť.

The most surprising statistic of the day was that these 40 bowlers also rolled 106 strikes in the two games!! John Walker rolled the most (11), which gave him the men's high game trophy for a score of 222. Ken Williams was right behind him (9) and took the men's high series trophy with a 369 for two games. Martha Erwin won the prize for the most strikes but not winning any other competition and Alyce Jones rolled the last strike and took home the bottle with the blue balloon. Jack Strickler should have been given a prize for a 'śspread eagle'ť when he stepped over the foul line onto the oiled surface of the alley. That is not a good idea unless you can ice skate in bowling shoes. John Walker got a real eagle (4 strikes in a row), as did Ken Williams. Lisa Woodard got a turkey that we called a broken winged eagle as she rolled 3 strikes, a gutter ball, then picked up that spare with a strike ball.

We also had a bottle with a red balloon for those unfortunate enough to get a split but lucky (or talented) enough to pick it up. There were only 4 names on that bottle and Carl Lorentzen took it home for the last split pickup.

The high women's game trophy went to Marlene Sewell and the high women's series trophy went to Avis Walker. I'm not sure what names were actually on all the trophies as Milan 's label maker was malfunctioning and he was being creative. I know that on John's and mine our last name is Walxer. Good luck Sewell and Williams!!

To give all bowlers a chance to win something we had category competitions for men and women competing together and not having won a trophy. They were awarded small dishes of candy topped with Weeple People made by our granddaughter Kaila on our snow trip.

170 and over '“ Frank Smith 195

160-169 - Jack Strickler 167

150 - 159 - Lisa Woodard 158

140 '“149 - Bob Phelan 145

130 '“139 - Bob Erwin 138

120 '“ 129 - Pat Pardee 129

100-119 - Carol Giolitti and Don Snodgrass tied at 118

99-76 - Sally Merchant and Wally Everett tied at 98

75 and under Dorothy Evans and Rose Bree tied at 75

Lowest score who had not won any other prize - a jar of kisses went to Art Price.

The last competition we had was a chance at the end of their first game for everyone to predict the score of their second game. Surprising enough 5 people hit it right on the nose and Kudos were given to John Evans, Jack Giolitti, Liz Phelan, Bill Everett and Ken Wygal. A large basket of assorted goodies were passed around to all so we all went home winners!!

Mary and Milan and John and I hope that everyone had a fun time and will be back to join us next year.

Madeline Update

Madeline is finding the joy of food and speech. So far she has enjoyed rice cereal, strained carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, applesauce bananas and pears. Pears and sweet potatoes are the current favorites.

Last week she was saying Baaa, Baaa, Baaa. This week she has progresses to Maaa, Maaa, Maaa. Can 'śGrandpa'ť be far behind?

Pot Luck

Get your appetite ready for the February 24th CB pot luck. The Phelans are chairing this dinner and promise a fun evening with surprise events and dances.
