The RECORD Volume XXXXV No. 5 Robert Kratz - Publisher May, 2004 President's Message by Martha Erwin We Clutch Busters give a big THANK YOU to Carol and Jack G. for hosting our Garage Sale 2004. Thank You to all the CB's who brought their really good "stuff." Thank You to all the CB's who helped put all that good stuff out on about 10 of Jack's tables and two clothing racks and priced it all. Thank You to all the CB's who bought so much of the good stuff that other CB's brought to Garage Sale 2004. Thank You to the weatherman who failed to produce the predicted showers. And, Thank You to the weatherman who brought those showers about 2 o'clock which provided an opportune reason to end Garage Sale 2004 early. Thank You to the clean-up crew that transported the remains to the Erwin garage to go to a boy scout garage sale. Thank You to Jack and Carol for the bit of light (?) refreshments enjoyed on their patio by the clean-up crew. We made a tidy little profit from Garage Sale 2004 and will surely enjoy spending every penny of our profits. Be sure and check out Bob Phelan's article in this issue about our club's web site. A good turnout from our club and almost all of our Newer Dancers helped make up about 9 squares dancing with the Diablo Singles and Doubles for their Anniversary and caller celebration. That was a fun evening. A bigger turnout than many of our Friday and Saturday night hoedowns! Maybe they are onto a new idea? So, May, here we come with plans for an ice cream social to celebrate 8 weeks of dancing for our Newer Dancers, a campout, and more squaring up with our great caller, Gary. If I was a fox, my den would have been well marked. Answer on last page of paper Garage Sale by Jack and Carol Giolitti The C.B. Garage Sale on April 17,2004 held at the Giolitti's home turned out to be blessed with good weather and lots of helpers, who managed to have fun, and even sell some items. We made $490.00 clear for the club. We had fewer donations to sell this year, but had a fair amount of steady customers between 8AM and 2PM. We had a brief 5 minute light sprinkle of rain about 2:30PM, and a lull in customers after that. We started to clean up about 3PM. The valuable merchandise that was not sold was donated to Martha Erwin for a future Rummage Sale through their church. Everything was packed, cleaned, and back in order by 4PM. We CB'S were so much more organized and efficient this year! It made the work easier and quicker for everyone. A big THANKS and YELLOW ROCK to each one of you for all your donations and hard work. It Couldn't Last Milan reported he recently received notice from our school site that our rent would be going up from $35 per night to $50 per night. Still a bargain over our former school locations. News From the Alley by Avis Walker The 1st game of April on the 6th was very interesting. Tom Lococo, Don Snodgrass, Allen Wesdorf, Avis Walker and Bob Erwin all bowled double strikes. No one was able to stretch it to 3 in a row for a turkey but Bob Erwin took the high score with a 173 followed by Avis Walker with a 172. Don Snodgrass had a very nice 149 and Don Lollich seemed very surprised when he picked up an unusual split of the 2-8-10 pins. In the second game Wynell Snodgrass surprised us all, including herself, when she came in second to Milan Gregovich's 157 with a 148 beating out John Walker by one pin. This is Wynell's highest game ever. She seems to keep breaking that record regularly lately. We'll have to keep an eye on that girl. She is definitely losing the title of Gutter Girl. In the 3rd game Don Lollich picked up another split of 1-2-7-9. He seemed to be getting more than his share of splits that day so it's a good thing he's getting good at picking them up!! He finished with a 151 second high score to Avis Walker's 159. Wynell was the Queen for the Day with her great game of 148 and a series of 367. Watch your average climb Baby!! On April 13th John Walker was the shinning star. He took all three games with a 161, 182, and a 194 for a 537 series. Man he was hard to live with for the next week!! So on the next Tuesday, April 20th, even though John led off the first game with a turkey Avis Walker had high score of 183 to John's 179 and Pat Pardee's 173. Milan Gregovich won the second game with a 158 but Avis still beat John 139 to 135 while in the same lanes Janet Lococo beat husband Tom 130 to 123 and Wynell Snodgrass beat husband Don 129 to 121. In the third game John rolled another turkey and took high game with a 189 and high series of the day with a 502. Don Snodgrass also rolled a turkey and a 158 and Milan Gregovich had a 156. We now have a little controversy. Who is the winner of the day?? The bowler with 2 out of 3 wins or the bowler with high series?? Would you care to vote?? Just email your vote to thejwalkers@comcast.net Simply state: 2 out of 3 or high series Your vote will be appreciated if we don't argue ourselves out during our three weeks vacation. The Walkers will be leaving on Tues. April 27th to fly back East and then drive the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains, visit my sister and her family who have a horse breeding farm in Alabama, visit Memphis and fly home from Nashville. In my absence Don Snodgrass has offered to try to make time to do this column until I return. As he is also standing in as Welcoming Committee for us we are going to owe him big time when we get back. I hope all the bowlers miss us and do great things for Don to report. Have fun at lunch and just maybe some of our other club members will join you. More Bowling News by Don Snodgrass With Avis and John going on vacation, Don agreed to fill in with the rest of the bowling news. Bowling April 27, 2004 In the absence of your normal bowling reporter, who flew off to visit relatives and do some sight seeing, I will undertake to fill in a little bit. Today we had 9 bowlers, including a visitor, Bill Farry who has bowled with us previously. Scores today ranged from 88 to a high of 186 pins, -- no 200 plus games. We had 2 ties in total pins for the 3 games -- Don Lollich and Don Orton tied at 335, and Bob Erwin and Don Snodgrass tied at 396 total pins. Series high for total pins goes to Pat Pardee at 451, followed closely by Allen Wesdorf at 449. In game 1, Allen had an Eagle, which is 4 strikes in a row. This probably helped him get the high score of 186 pins. Bob Erwin also had a unique hit. With the 3-7-10 pins still standing after the first ball, he managed to get them all down, only slightly less difficult that picking up the 7-10 split, the most difficult bowling shot. We all had a good time, although there were a few choice words uttered as the ball rolled down the alley. I can personally attest to that. Fortunately there are no clubs, 'al a' golf, to bend around a tree, or other fixed object. After the bowling most of us convened at Carrow's for lunch and good conversation where we were joined by Lois, Peggy and the Everettes. Bill Everette had a short stay in the hospital, but is better now and able to be out and about nearly ready to join the group. Bowling May 4, 2004 Today 12 people tried their luck with the pins. This was a "No Tap" day, -- 9 pins on the first ball counts as a strike, -- great. Wel-l-l-l-l strikes abounded. More specifically, their were 6 Turkeys and 4 Eagles. Turkeys, 3 strikes in a row, were scored by Pat Pardee (2), Janet Lococo, Allen Wesdorf (2) and Don Orton. Eagles, 4 strikes in a row, were scored, Wynell Snodgrass, Mary Gregovich and Pat Pardee. Don Orton, 5 in a row, and Tom Lococo, 7 in a row. Don Orton and Tom Lococo split high score for the men at 218 and Pat Pardee for the women had a 211. Other notable scores were Janet Lococo at 193 on a 132 average and Wynell Snodgrass at 193 on a 99 average, a huge spread from the average. Congrats Wynell. High series, 3 games, belongs to Pat Pardee at 626 with Tom Lococo, 2nd at 554 followed by Allen Wesdorf at 519. Other notable events were Janet picked of a 7-9 pin split and Pat got the 2-8 split. After bowling most of us adjourned to Lyons Restaurant for lunch and chit chat where we were joined by Lois Lollich, Peggy Wygal and Walia & Bill Everette. Contributors to the Record The following Clutch Busters have graciously contributed their time and talent in submitting articles and information to the Record this Month Editor Chris Kratz Contributors: Martha Erwin Bob Phelan Bonnie Zehrung Avis Walker Don Snodgrass Carol Giolitti Jack Strickler Kathy and Herb Explore the Southwest by Kathy O'Toole It was the most amazing sight...Easter dawn at the Grand Canyon. Little did we realize we would be here for the holiday when we signed up for an Elderhostel hiking trip to the Four Corners (where Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico come together). We decided to drive to Cortez, CO via the Grand Canyon to pick up the program which began Easter Sunday afternoon. We spent a week at a pueblo-style bed and breakfast in the McElmo Canyon...beautiful country overshadowed by snow-covered Ute Peak at 9,978 feet above sea level We were part of a larger group of 18 hikers from all over the U.S. Our leader was an archeologist and former philosophy professor from Ireland, assisted by another local naturalist. We learned all about the Anasazi Indians who lived in this area from about 700-1300 A.D. Our program included several hikes to study early pueblo ruins just a few miles from where we were staying. We explored Hovenweep National Monument, Sand Canyon, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, and the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park. We listened to a speaker who shared his knowledge of Zuni Indian artwork. A Native American family entertained us with dancing, flute playing, even making their own musical instruments, jewelry and clothing - very talented and resourceful people, nice too. We were warmly encouraged to join in the dancing...lots of fun and good laughs. If you've never been on an Elderhostel trip, we would highly recommend it! After leaving Cortez, we headed for Durango, an old cowboy town near silver mines. Then on to Moab (Arches National Park)...amazing sandstone rock formations. We headed southwest to Bryce (you've got to see the "hoodoos") and Zion National Parks...all different but equally spectacular. We ended up spending a couple days at Las Vegas...no winners here! The weather on our trip varied from snow flurries at the Grand Canyon to 82 degrees at Barstow. We put 2,700 miles on our Jeep...great trip...can't wait for the next one! 20th Annual Fall Frolic Bob and Chris will be attending the Fall Frolic, featuring caller Mike Sikorsky in colorful Solvang CA, and will act as wagon masters if others are interested in making this a CB outing. This Swedish town/attraction is always a fun get away and on October 15, 16 and 17 you get Solvang and Mike. Sign ups will be needed soon to insure reservations for those bringing rigs, and those needing hotel/motel accommodations. Bob and Chris will be staying at the Flying Flags RV Park, 180 Ave of the Flags in Buellton. Price is $31.50 per night for full hookups. Committee Positions Still Open The Clutch Busters still need a person or persons to be in charge of the Picnic Games. Others will pitch in and help but we need YOU? to take charge. We also need a Christmas Party Chair person. Either position will get you an invite to the Board Christmas Party. What a deal. Who is that Clutch Buster? Egon Pedersen 1.
