Gobble, Gobble, Gobble...That time of the year, already?! Yikes!! What happened to yachting and Pirates? I guess we were so busy having all that fun time just swished right along.

For our CB fun in October we put our hands together with a BIG THANK-YOU TO, Terry & Lynn for the Yachting (having been there and done that, it is definitely not a Boat!) on the 10th (sunny & windy) and 23rd (hint of rain and glass smooth waters). From all accounts the CBs had a great time being on one of those boats plying up and down the Delta rather than standing onshore watching with envy, as I heard Egon remark. Then the Pirates came to town and took up a one-night stand at Oak Park Center . Bob & Liz managed to turn that plain old room into a pirate's den. Remarkable! Another BIG THANK YOU TO, Bob & Liz, helpers John & Avis, John & Dorothy and Kathy O. It was indeed an evening for us to enjoy being our young-at-heart selves.

Our November calendar includes the potluck on the 11th, Plus Hoedown with the theme"Come Dance in the Pumpkin Patch" with Mike Sikorsky on the 20th, (see article following) with an After Party at Giolitti's, and no dancing on the 25th, Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving you say? Already? Yikes!!

The December 1st Board Meeting will be at the home of Ted T. Election of 2005 officers will be at the General Meeting on December 2. Club Christmas Party will be December 16.

See you with your dance shoes on,

Pres. Martha   >^_^<

  Sikorsky Hoedown

November 20th is our Mike Sikorsky Hoedown . The theme will be Fall related called"Down in the Pumpkin Patch." Kathy O'Toole has the decorations ready and would probably appreciate some help in setting them up. Please bring small whole pumpkins or gourds for decorations.

We also need you to bring a door prize, something new, useful or fun and wrapped.

The food and work assignments were in the Sept.   news letter. If you have any questions contact Carol Giolitti.

Carol has asked that everyone be generous with their food portions, as Mike usually draws quite a crowd.

And don't forget the after party at Jack and Carol Giolitti's house after the dance. Guaranteed to be a good time.,

Dawdling on the Delta

by Avis Walker

On Saturday, Oct. 23rd, 14 CBers joined Lynn and Terry Leonard aboard their new home away from home the"Hasty Decision" moored at Pittsburg Marina.   Although it was a drippy, dreary, drizzly day we had been assured the event would NOT be canceled even if we spent it tied up at the dock.    So with rain gear on and ready for adventure we were greeted by Lynn at the front gate and Terry at the boat.   We were given the grand tour of their lovely 2 bedroom, 2 bath craft and shakedown instructions as to which is the starboard and port and which was the bow and aft so we would be able to understand our instructions once underway.   Also important is where to stow your gear out of the way. Terry and Lynn have done a marvelous job of renovating this very comfortable yacht.   You can see Terry's master craftsmanship in all the innovative storage spaces and woodworking and Lynn 's hand in the cozy warmth.    They are both very generous in sharing this prize possession with the rest of us. Anyone who wanted to was invited to have a turn at driving and anyone could use the head as long as they used no more than 3 sheets of tp per flush.   Otherwise, you get the undesirable job of unstopping the marine head.   We were all invited to take on the jobs of handling the lines or anchor.    Personally I don't see how 2 people can operate a craft this size by themselves.   They must be able to move really fast.   We were even invited to use one of the 2 beds for a nap if we wished as long as we took off our shoes.   However, to my knowledge no one took them up on that.   We were all too busy enjoying the scenery and good fellowship.

The rain stopped just in time for us to cruise out of the marina and over to Horseshoe Bend off Decker Island where we dropped anchor, kicked back to visit and eat, and eat and eat.   The usual delicious CBers food was varied and plentiful.   With lots of good conversation to go along with the food we learned all sorts of new things about our CB friends.   Do you know the ages of Dorothy and John Evans and Carl Lorentzen?   I do now!!   Or how hard it is to get served liquor at a legal age when you have a baby face??    Or what interesting design does Lynn Leonard have on her cheeks as a result of her fall into the engine compartment earlier this year?   And I mean on the cheeks that she won't show you.

Along with the fun, food and conversation we had the opportunity to view delta wildlife up close when a sea lion put on quite a display of playing with his lunch not too far from the boat.   He would throw it up into the air and catch it and slap it around on the water.   It looked to me like he was teasing the seagulls that wanted a bite for themselves.    On the way back to the marina there are a pair of sea lions that make their home in the bell buoy off the entrance of the marina.   Terry came in around it really close so we got a good look and one jumped off the buoy and played in our wake.

It was a lovely day, rain and all.   Good friends, good food and good fun.   We had the usual great CB time.   We all voted to make this an annual outing; so if you missed out this year don't miss out next time around.   Thank you very much Lynn and Terry for your generous sharing and a wonderful day.

More Boating

An additional group of CBers when out with the Leonards the weekend before the Walker article trip. They had a sunny day but lots of wind. Terry is still trying to decide which group had the better food and gave him and Lynn the most left overs.

Terry and Lynn have expressed what a great time they had on the CB outings and thank everyone for coming, bringing the great food and chipping in for the fuel. They are already arranging plans for a CB cruise next year.

Halloween Party

by Dorothy Evans

On Thursday night, I was lazily drifting down the Delta on Terry and Lynn's boat. The air was cool and a light mist chilled my face. Wispy clouds floated across a bright yellow full moon. An eerie peace enveloped me as I lay across the bow, eyes closing more and more with each bobbing of the waves. A dreamy sleep was almost upon me when in the distance I could just barely hear the sound of music and people laughing. The sound grew closer and closer until there, looming before me, was a huge pirate ship! Unbelieving, I crept closer to get a better look. Their plank was down so I boarded the ship with some trepidation, but mostly curiosity. On their deck were two pirates who looked a lot like Avis and John W. The man was stroking a colorful red and green parrot perched on his shoulder, but his shirt was a clean white, so that parrot certainly wasn't like the pigeons we have at home. Following the sound of the music and laughter, I sneaked down into the hull of the ship and peeked into the room. The front was draped all in black and a huge pirate flag (that Raider fans would kill for) was displayed. On the stage was a large replica of the ship I was on. To its left, some poor guy had just lost his head in a guillotine and another had been locked in the stocks for quite some time it seemed based on the appearance of the bones that were left. A huge chest of gold treasure was guarded by a skeleton and other skeletons hung from the walls. On stage, a pirate who looked amazingly like Gary , called the dancing.

To my surprise, almost everyone at this party looked like the Clutch Busters and mostly everyone was in pirate garb. One guy (Don S.) had a patch over his eye scrounged from his wife's medical supplies. Pirates Diana and Lisa were in striped tops and Kathy was dressed in black and white. Pirates Milan and Tracy had five o'clock shadows in dire need of a shave. Milan also sported a Pedro Martinez hairdo, but how could that be since he's a Cardinal fan? Carol, a Groucho Marx look-alike pirate, had a large fake nose, glasses, bushy black eyebrows and mustache and long black hair. Bob and Liz each wore a red and black leather vest with strips of leather hanging from their shoulders that were banded at their wrists. I know a Harley biker-chick who would love to have that vest!!

Not everyone was a pirate, however. Wynell was an Indian, Lois wore a bright red foil wig and Don L. had colorful beads draped around his neck. Others, while not in costume but still clothed in Halloween spirit-type outfits, were April, Shirlee, Frank, Tim and Mary. Jack G. came as himself, as did Terry, Lynn, Erna, Bonnie and Joe Z., as well as Diablo Singles Stephen, Maggie, Pam and Doug. Helen looked cute in an orange top, full black skirt and orange bobby socks.

Ribbons were awarded: Scariest - Kim (curly headed wind-up doll with large key out her back) and Tom (wolf man who had burst from his clothes leaving them tattered and his shoes toeless); Creepiest - Jack S. (hooded shroud with silver face) and Jean (green rubber nose and long black/silver hair); Funniest - John E. and me (with that fresh from the dryer look of static cling); Most Original - Bob K. (swashbuckling pirate in red baggy britches); and Best Costume - Bob E. (pirate with long black hair and beard).

All the CB look-alikes voted on costumes and prizes were awarded to: 3rd place - Chris (a sexy pirate in satiny black and white pants); 2nd place - John W. (the pirate with the parrot) and 1st place - Martha (pirate barmaid with long red skirt, black vest, tons of flowing black hair and a toothless grin).

There were four entries in the pumpkin carving contest: Welch pumpkin with a continuous rope cut around it (Terry); a carved moonscape of a witch and bats (Bob K.); a gourd square dance couple, the boy in black and white and the girl in pink netting (Bob & Martha); and a pumpkin with a big nose and wild hair (Milan). Terry won first place and Milan took second.

Bob and Liz threw this pirate bash, and just like their CB counterparts, did an excellent job.

The next thing I knew, I was back on the Hasty Decision. My head was reeling with all the sights and sounds of that wonderful party. Was it all a dream? It seemed so real. But wait! I know how to tell. A true pirate party would have rum in their punch. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, but shiver me timbers, there was no "proof" in that punch!

News From the Alley

by Avis Walker

Well to continue the saga from Oct. 5th when Ron and Allen gave Joan and John a 35 pin per game handicap and lived to regret it.   On Oct. 12th Ron and Joan Trujillo were joining us for their last Tuesday before returning home to Sun City , Ca and Avis was back in the bowling line up.   It was NO TAP day and the scoreboard showed Ron T. and John W. on one side and Joan T. and Avis W. on the other.   The guys should have given the gals a 51 pins a game handicap based on the differences in our averages but they weren't about to seeing as how we creamed them the last NO TAP Joan and Ron were here.   But without the handicap I wasn't going to put any money on the games either.   I SHOULD HAVE!!   Without any help from a handicap Avis and Joan took the 1st game 427 total to 332.   The guys took the 2nd game 370 to 315.   The gals took the 3rd game 417 to 381 AND TOTAL PINS 1159 TO 1083.    I must admit that after a really lousy first game and a shoulder adjustment from Allen; Ron rolled some really nice games but NOT ENOUGH CHARLIE!!   We had some really hot NO TAP bowling going on that day.   In the first game John Walker had 5 strikes in a row but his 190 wasn't quite up to Avis' 2 turkeys for a 202 or Joan's 4 in a row that got her a 225. Over on the next lane Ken Wygal rolled a very nice 172 and on the other side Milan rolled a 175. In the 2nd game (after his adjustment), Ron Trujillo rolled the high game of a 216 helped along with 4 in a row and a turkey.   John Walker picked up a 2,4,10 split but no turkey. Milan was still up there with a 170 and Pat Pardee rolled a 176.   Ron also rolled high game for the 3rd game with a 239 and 6 in a row but Joan and Avis kept their boat afloat with Joan rolling a 221 and Avis 196.    Joan rolled high series of the day with a 609 and won the women's first place for $9.00.   She was the only money winner in our group. Of course it took the alley 4 weeks to announce the winners and hand out the money so Joan, your check is in the mail - eventually.

On Oct. 19th the Snodgrass couple was still among the missing (off to a jazz festival) and I'm not sure where everyone else was but we only had 8 bowlers.   We had a ball anyway.

John Walker took the first game with a 160 and Wally Everett was 2nd high game with a 136.    In the 2nd game our friend Don Orton picked up a tricky 5-7-10 split for a 152 game but was edged out by Allen Wesdorf with a 163.   Allen also took high game the 3rd game with the only turkey of the day; which gave him a very nice 171 and high series of the day of 460 edging out John Walker for high series by 4 pins.

On Oct. 26th the Snodgrass couple had returned and were on the same alley as John and I.   Wynell and I just weren't up to snuff and the guys took all three games and total pins.   John Walker took the first game with his first 3 balls being strikes for a turkey.   He matched his 165 score in the second game and took high game there also.   He didn't match his 165 score a third time and took high game with a 162 instead.   Ken Wygal had duplicated his score the first two game and bested that score by three pins in the third game.   We are going to have to find out what the special prize is if you roll 3 duplicate scores in a series.   I know there is one out there somewhere.   John Walker took high series of the day acing Allen out by 5 pins. If you notice I'm not mentioning many scores it's because they were so pathetic.

The next Tues. was Nov. 2nd and NO TAP again.   Allen Wesdorf led off the first game with 3 strikes in a row.   A good start but his 164 couldn't top Bill Everett's 6 in a row for a 172 or John Walker's turkey, open frame and then 5 in a row for a 203.   Allen led off the 2nd game with a turkey again but this time his one open frame was followed by 6 in a row and earned him top score of the day of 242.   I thought I was doing pretty well with my turkey and a 193 until I looked over at Allen's score.   The third game Bob Erwin came to the fore with top score of 181 followed by Avis with a 170.   Allen took top series with a 545 and we will have to wait to see if it puts him in the money.    On our lane we were having a friendly competition between the male Snodgrass/Walker team verses the female Snodgrass/Walker team.   John's 203 pretty well knocked the gals out of the first game but we stayed pretty close throughout the second and won the third game which Wynell says is the most important anyway as it leaves the most lasting memory.   Good thought Wynell.   You make a great partner!!   As a small aside John beat me the first game but I took the 2nd and 3rd and total pins for our TOP DOG award for the first time in a month.   AT LAST!!   We all went out to lunch and I Hop had to put up with 14 of us singing Happy Birthday to Peg Wygal.

I hope all of you have something (beside square dancing) that you do that gives you as much fun and joy in your life as our bowling group gives me.   Come join us sometime.

Potluck Reminder

This Thursday, (11/11) is our annual potluck at the CB class night. Remember to bring your own utensils, mugs for the soups and bowls for the salads. Our hosts, Joe and Bonny Zehrung suggest you might want to being more than one mug to taste the different soups available unless you don't mind mixing the end of one with the beginning of another tasty bowl.

There will be no nursing home in our future...

When   we get old and feeble we are going to get on a Celebrity Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day each. I have checked on reservations at Celebrity and we can get a long term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day each, that leaves $65 a day for:

Gratuities which will be only $10 per day.

We will have as many as 10 meals a day if we can waddle to the restaurant or we can have room service. We can have breakfast in bed every day of the week.

Celebrity has three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers and shows every night.

They have free toothpaste and razors, and all the free soap and shampoo.

They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra five bucks worth of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.

We will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days.

T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have a mattress replaced? No problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience.

Clean sheets and towels every day and you don't even have to ask for them.

If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on medicare. If you fall and break a hip on a Celebrity ship they will up grade you to a suite for the rest of your life (can't beat that).

Now hold on for the best. Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti , Australia , New Zealand , Asia , or you can name where you want to go and Celebrity will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for us in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.

And just forward all our e-mail care of Celebrity. Com

Ps. If you die the Captain gives you a funeral and they just dump you over the side...at no charge.

Now, care to join us?
